#7 Does the Media Care? (VI Daily
News)
I was rapidly losing hope that I would get any help from the
media. However, I gave it a couple more half-hearted attempts before completely
giving up. Next I tried the executive editor of the Daily News.

Good Day Ms.
Bedminster
My name is
David Mattera. I talked briefly with you on the phone about possibly printing
some articles that I wrote about problems that I have had with a real estate
transaction; particularly trying to have the VI Real Estate Commission deal with
a complaint that I filed.
I have tied to get the Real Estate Commission to do their job,
that of policing the brokers that they license. I submitted all my
documentation to DLCA in November of 2020. They have dragged their feet since
then with a litany of excuses. I finally enlisted the aid of Administrator
Sammy Sanes to intervene. He forwarded my documentation to Commissioner
Evangelista who unfortunately has also chosen to ignore my written complaint.
Real estate is a huge industry in
the Virgin Islands. I am certain that your readers would be aghast at the lack
of support that exists for problems that arise with brokers. I have attached
the article I wrote that chronicles my correspondence with the Commission and
Mr. Sanes.
I understand that you are very busy
and probably short-staffed and would need to have a reporter talk to the
Commissioner and Mr. Sanes to get their sides of the story before you print
anything. I just want to stress, if there truly is a problem with the Real
Estate Commission, you couldn’t document it without a formal complaint that is
being ignored, such as mine.
Please take your time and give me your opinions,
David Mattera

Good day
John
I see that your
paper refers to itself as “The only non-government-sponsored newspaper in the
Virgin Islands”. If this means that you keep the government at arm’s length and
are willing to write about government corruption then I have a story for you.
My problem is with the VI Real Estate Commission. They are hidden within the
Department of Licensing and Consumers Affairs. One of their jobs is to police
the real estate brokers that they license. In other words, help citizens who
have been cheated by brokers. Unfortunately, to the contrary, they protect
brokers rather than prosecute them. Would you like to read some articles that I
wrote along with my attempts to get other newspapers to cover this story?
Sincerely,
David
Mattera
